Compound words
A compound word is two whole words joined: “sunset”, “cupcake”, “bedroom”. They look long but are not, because both halves are usually words the reader already knows. Spotting the join turns one long word into two the student can already read.
Useful for teaching that longer words come apart, before syllable division proper is introduced.
